KATIE MCLEAN
design + media
in the surf + wellness industries

As the only person born and raised in the Funk Zone of Santa Barbara, Ca
Katie McLean grew up amidst a warehouse of craftsmen, bohemian artists with a DIY mentality, and an influential surf history.
Her life and work seep creativity, culture, and adventure.
On one hand, Katie has a decade-long creative resume as a graphic designer, illustrator, video editor, retail designer, writer, muralist, former gallery owner, and newly a fashion and textile designer. All backed her BA in motion graphics from a full scholarship at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, a Women’s Entrepreneurial Ventures business certificate. On the other hand, Katie has been as a sponsored surfer, fitness ambassador, Pilates & boxing instructor, superfood herb educator for Sun Potion, front desk at Yoga Soup, and wellness + adventure writer. For years, Katie traveled the world surfing and blogging for Roxy Quiksilver + Roxy Outdoor Fitness after winning a 19,000-entry video & social media ambassador search. This unbelievable experience instilled in her the desire to inspire & unite like-minded ladies. Her roles representing adventure brands (On Running Shoes | Designer Protein | Roxy) and involvement in the health community perfectly expanded her freelance creative work into the surf, fashion, and wellness industries.

PSYCHEDELIC HONEY
Katie's excitedly merged her passions for art+health into one all-encompassing pursuit of her own.

Ethically Made in California | Consciously Designed by Katie McLean

While living in Kauai, Katie found herself moving most freely and radiantly from mountains to the sea to the yoga mat to the town.
She was empowered - always wearing the most simple, seamless, minimal, comfy sports bras.
Upon returning to Santa Barbara for a visit, she fell for a talented surfboard shaper and fellow Gemini. Ryan Lovelace. A keen sense of design and love for the surf community paralleled Katie’s. Together they traveled, riding motorcycles in Bali and Australia, running trails in Portugal and Italy, surfing in Ireland, and exploring the open roads of Oregon, Texas, and Mexico. Upon settling down in her hometown of Santa Barbara, Katie strived to put her love for design & wellness together.

Living with her lover in a 1948 school bus over Rincon's timeless waves, Katie delighted in the hunt for 60’s & 70’s textiles for Ryan’s handcrafted surfboards.
She worked for a local superfood & herb company, Sun Potion, while returning to Otis to study digital textile design and get a business certificate.
From her father’s hippie days dying and silkscreening fabric, constructing canvas windmills, and collecting textiles on travels,
to her mother’s study of the science of fabric, line of scarves, silk painting & costume sewing,
Katie instinctively reconnected to her family's fabric history. She had serendipitously come full circle.

Today in the heart of Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone,
is Ryan's retro Trim Surf Shop & Katie's PH HQ & design studio.
When she’s not sliding in the sea, meandering trails in the mountains, or making massive messes of health concoctions in the kitchen, you’ll find Katie here.
She is thriving, freelancing for the like-minded, hustling on her own PH love child, and indulging in her latest art form
pairing her vintage-inspired prints with her comfy, contemporary active wear designs.
